Rubbing Alcohol To Control Oily Skin???

ACNE SKIN TREATMENT CHICO, CA    916SKIN ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC

Angelina Jolie has oily skin, but do you think she uses rubbing alcohol on her face??? I don't think so!!!

Stripping your skin of oil triggers your sebaceous glands to produce even more oil in order to compensate for the loss. More oil can lead to more breakouts so put away the rubbing  alcohol!

The key here is pH.  Your skin is slightly acidic. Think - vinegar and oranges.  You want a cleanser, a toner, and a chemical exfoliant that also have an acidic pH. Unfortunately, the term "pH balanced" doesn't hold much meaning with over-the-counter products. It is merely a marketing ploy.

Most dermatologists and skin care practitioners carry products that are formulated to compliment your skin's pH. For best results with your acne skin care products, see a professional to have your acne evaluated. An skin evaluation helps ensure that you are sent home with the proper products for your acne.

Is Glycolic Acid Right for Your Acne?

TREATMENT FOR CYSTIC ACNE IN CHICO, CA    916SKIN ACNE CLINIC

Glycolic Acid is mainly derived from sugar cane. It is an exfoliating agent that helps slough off dead cells to decongest the skin. It is an aggressive molecule with a two carbon chain that facilitates penetration that is quicker and deeper than other acids. Glycolic acid is best suited for those that have thick, oily, non-sensitive skin, and are not prone to redness. However... there are many people who consider their skin to be sensitive, but find their skin unreactive to glycolic.

It is difficult to know whether or not your skin is suited for glycolic.  If you find that using a skin care product with glycolic makes you red - it is most likely not for you. Your best bet, is to schedule an appointment with a skin care practitioner and be tested for glycolic sensitivity. These types of appointments are typically complimentary, and provide you with direction on what types of products are best for your skin.

Skin... Our Largest Organ

916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC (530) 503.9169

Skin, it is our largest organ. Not only does it cover your entire body, but it has a surface area that averages about 2 square meters. Its thickness varies from 0.5mm on your eyelids to 4mm or more on the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. And remember, the next time you step on the scale, your skin accounts for around 16 percent of your total body weight.

Our skin gets thinner as we age due to declining hormones, long term sun exposure, gut imbalances, certain medications, and if thin skin runs in your family - genetics.

There are scores of websites, drug stores, day spas, and the like that are teeming with skin care products to plump, thicken, stimulate and rebuild!  While there are thousands of skin care products out there that lead you to believe they will thicken your skin - the best course of action, and the biggest bang for your buck is PREVENTATIVE.

What Causes Some Babies To Have Acne?

916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC IN CHICO, CA

Babies are exposed to their mother's sex hormones in the uterus. If mom has higher levels of testosterone, the baby's follicles will be stimulated, leading to larger pores. And, if the baby is genetically prone to acne, that baby may experience its first breakout. There is another factor that can affect a baby's pores...  During the infant's first 2 to 3 months out of the womb, its sex glands begin producing hormones. Think of this as a hormonal test run to make sure systems are up to speed - so that when puberty rolls around, the pores and secondary sex characteristics will be revin' to go! Both of the above scenarios can lead to a baby's first breakout - AKA: neonatal acne.

Don't fret, in most cases this is short lived. The acne will subside, and the large pores will transform into soft, supple newborn skin.

How Does A Cyst Form?

916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC (530) 503.9169

There are different types of cysts, and in terms of acne, they can develop in one of two ways. Several + inflamed follicles can rupture at the same time and combine to form a much larger acne lesion. A cyst can also form when one follicle becomes inflamed, and white blood cells move to the area forming a pus-filled lesion containing keratin, bacteria and white blood cells. A cyst is typically 1cm or greater in diameter - about the size of the tip of your pinky.

Although popping a cyst yourself may seem rewarding, it can also be dangerous, and lead to infection if you don't take proper care. The removal of a large cyst may require local anesthetic & suturing.

Risk Of Melanoma For Those With Acne

ACNE SKIN CARE CHICO, CA   916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC

916SKIN ACNE CLINIC carries a variety of professional sunscreens for acne-prone skin that WILL NOT clog your pores. Do Micropeels Get Rid of Acne?

TREATMENT FOR ACNE IN CHICO, RED BLUFF, REDDING    916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC

Micropeel is synonymous with microdermabrasion. Micropeel acne skin treatments in Chico, Ca., mechanically abraid the surface of the skin to improve texture and skin tone. Micropeels can be helpful in treating noninflamed acne when used in combination with other treatment therapies. By itself, a micropeel can give instant gratification for those seeking smoother more radiant skin. It can also give your skin the boost it needs the day before a big event. Micropeel skin treatments are one of the preferred methods for skin rejuvenation by pregnant and lactating women, as well as those seeking an alternative to chemical peels.  Depending on the depth of the peel, microdermabrasion can be a relaxing skin treatment and provides that instant "wow-factor" for silky smooth glowing skin. However, the results of microdermabrasion are short lived, and it alone will not clear your acne.

Sunscreen In The Winter - Really???

ACNE SKIN CARE PROGRAM       916SKIN ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC

In the United States, UV exposure is greatest in the summer due to the angle of the sun. However, UV rays reach the earth everyday - sun or snow! Severe sunburns can also be experienced in the winter because the sun is closer to the earth, and the snow reflects 85% to 90% of the sun's UV rays.

Most acne skin care products, due to their peeling components, make the skin more vulnerable to the sun and can cause more damage than good if you don't take special precautions. Respect your skin and be safe year round!

Does Salicylic Acid Help Get Rid of Acne?

TREATING ACNE IN CHICO, CA    916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC

Salicylic acid is derived from the bark of the willow tree, and is most commonly known for roll in fighting acne. Kloie's Acne Treatment Testimonial

Kloie's Acne Treatment Testimonial - Red Bluff, Ca.

"I got my first breakouts in the 5th grade, and continued to break out more profusely as I got older. At one time, I enjoyed having photos taken of me and being in the spotlight, but with acne, I hated being seen. I was always hiding my face behind my hair and refusing to take pictures. In the car, when passing people, I would put up my hand up to cover the side of my face just in case the driver in the other car might look over. I had never cared what people thought in the past, but with acne, I became incessantly self-conscious, which degraded my self esteem.

I had Grade-IV acne. My skin was inflamed and had many large active pustules with puffy scabbed cheeks. My skin felt hot and irritated, and there were only a few places on my face where unblemished skin was visible. I also had an oily sheen and uneven skin tone. I tried to get rid of my acne with Proactive, AcneFree, Burt's Bees, Neutrogena, and other over the counter products. Prescription acne medications offered no results. Nothing I tried worked. Then, my mother found 916SKIN – ACNE CLINIC, and we decided to give it a try.

My 916 Acne Treatment Program has been different from anything I have tried in the past. I had a skilled acne specialist to guide me through the entire program. I have a routine I have to follow with precise steps and proper products. Having a practitioner to instruct me and help control my skin has been wonderful. Tatja Renee, my acne specialist, knew exactly what she was doing and due to her skills, my diligence, and my mother's dedication – my skin is clear!

The acne program has indeed changed my life. It has made me radiant and confident again, a state I have not experienced since I was a much younger girl. I am so grateful to have my skin back!  It took about three months to achieve clear skin; however, every step of the way was 110% worth it. I have now been clear for about four months. To stay clear I keep up my routine, apply sunscreen often, and don't neglect the treatments.

I highly recommend 916SKIN to anyone seeking a life changing treatment. This has been a wonderful gift for me and I am forever changed. Seriously, just do it!"

What Is Photodynamic Skin Rejuvenation?

ACNE SKIN TREATMENT IN CHICO, CA  at  916SKIN  - ACNE CLINIC

Treatment protocols for Photodynamic Skin Rejuvenation take 2 to 3 hours and vary from practice to practice. For non-inflamed acne, the treatment typically includes deep cleansing, astringent and microdermabrasion to prepare the skin. Next, Levulan ALA, a photosensitizing agent is applied to the affected area and allowed to penetrate the skin for 1 to 2 hours depending on the location and the severity of skin damage. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a light treatment therapy similar to a laser, is used to activate the Levulan. IPL is selectively administered to acneic, damaged or diseased tissue while leaving healthy skin in tact.

Following the procedure, patients experience a sunburn-like reaction with varying degrees of skin shedding for 3 to 5 days. Generally, the skin heals quickly with the aid of a closely monitored skin care protocol as well as LED light if necessary.

Photodynamic Skin Rejuvenation with Levulan ALA is safe and effective. It can be used for a variety of cosmetic and dermatologic conditions, and can safely treat many skin types and ethnicities.

How Does Benzoyl Peroxide Work?

ACNE SKIN CARE CONSULTATION      916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC

Benzoyl peroxide was discovered in the 1920's for its ability to kill bacteria. It is made up of two benzoyls and a peroxide molecule, which metabolize into benzoic acid and oxygen. It is the oxygen component of the molecule that wipes out the bacteria (P. acnes), and helps control acne. Although the bacteria are killed on contact, the pimple may linger for quite some time, due in part, to inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide is also a peeling agent. It peels away dead cells on the skin's surface and inside the pilosebaceous glands (pores).

Dermatologists and acne skin care experts have utilized benzoyl peroxide to help treat many forms of acne. Benzoyl peroxide, by itself, will not treat acne. Acne needs to be treated from many angles with a variety of products chosen specifically for your condition.

Is Benzoyl Peroxide Aging Your Skin?

ACNE SKIN CARE CLINIC IN CHICO, CA   916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC (530) 503.9169

There is an ongoing debate in the skin care industry as to whether benzoyl peroxide (BPO) causes premature aging. Two expert dermatologists give opposing views.

Katie Rodan, M.D., dermatologist and co-developer of the acne skin care line, Proactive, says no. Dr. Rodan states that regular use of BPO has shown no signs of premature aging, regardless of its concentration. Rodan also says she has not come across any studies that suggest otherwise. (photo left)

Debra Luftman, M.D., Dermatologist and developer of the acne skin care line, Therapeutix, says yes. Dr. Luftman reports that even though, there have not been any long term studies on the effects of BPO on skin aging, BPO is partially made up of oxygen, which we know is a main culprit of free radical damage. (photo right)

To receive the anti-acne benefits of BPO, while receiving the synergistic affects of anti-oxidants, long term use of BPO should be accompanied with a non-comedogenic, pharmeceutical strength, topical vitamin C-serum.

Acne & The Stress Connection

ACNE TREATMENT IN CHICO, CA    916SKIN - ACNE SKINCARE CLINIC (530) 680.2027

Stress reveals its effects on the body in different ways. Each of us has our own constitutional weakness. When we are under stress, it weakens our immune system, and targets our body's weakest link. That weak link may be a particular organ that is genetically vulnerable, or tissue that has suffered a past injury. For example, those who have suffered a knee injury may experience knee pain when they are under stress. Those with a genetic predisposition to cardiovascular disease may experience high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, or shortness of breath as a result of being stressed, whereas, those with an inherent tendency towards diabetes may experience blurred vision, tingling in the extremities, or reoccurring bladder infections. Stress can disguise itself as a migraine, an ulcer, or a even yeast infection. If your weak link happens to be your skin, you may be prone to herpes outbreaks, eczema, psoriasis, or even acne. Weak links aren't limited to one symptom or condition. Learning to manage your stress means learning to manage your health, and possibly your skin.

Warning Signs of Basal Cell Carcinoma

ACNE & MEDICAL SKINCARE CLINIC IN CHICO, CA at 916SKIN  (530) 680.2027

Listen up! People that use acne or anti-aging products need to take extra precautions against sun exposure.

Basal cell carcinoma is caused by exposure to ultra violet radiation and is most commonly found on areas exposed to the sun. If you find a suspicious growth on your skin, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist immediately.

Warning Signs of Basal Cell Carcinoma:
  • An irritated patch of skin, which may crust over. Itching or tenderness may be present, or there may be no discomfort at all.
  • A sore that remains open for 3 or more weeks with bleeding or oozing present. Sores that do not heal are an early warning sign of basal cell carcinoma.
  • A pinkish growth with a prominent border and a crusty indentation at the center of the growth.
  • A translucent or shiny bump. Its color may be white, pink, or red. In dark haired, dark skinned people the bump may be darker in color - black, brown or tan.  It is often confused with a mole.
  • A waxy, shiny type growth that may have the appearance of a scar. This growth is yellow or white, and has poorly defined borders.

Tips For Keeping Acne-Prone Skin Hydrated...

ACNE SKIN CARE in CHICO, CA         916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC

Acne products can dry out your skin when not paired with water-binding buddy. Toss in a little winter weather, and your skin could begin to back track - and we can't have that!

Winter equates to lower humidity, colder temperatures and stronger winds. These conditions set the scene for dry, irritated skin... and acne. Dry skin can form "micro fissures" - tiny little cracks where water can escape. For you acne-prone peeps, hydrated skin helps normalize the shedding process to keep your skin looking ooo-la-la fresh! Here are a couple of tips for keeping skin protected through the winter.

#1) Use a hydrating serum, emulsion or gel to introduce and bind moisture in the skin.

#2) Use topicals that contain botanical-based anti-inflammatories to help control redness.

#3) Seal it up & lock it in! Products that contain dimethicone, create a seal over the skin to lock in moisture and help prevent transepidermal water loss.

#4) Protect from UV rays with broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 - even in the winter. Rain or shine.

ACNE SKIN CARE IN CHICO, CA   916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC (530) 503.9169

Did you know that in the dermatology world there are two types of inflamed pimples?

PAPULE: This type of pimple appears swollen and red   due to inflammation.

PUSTULE: This type of pimple has a red/inflamed base with a white/yellowish pus filled cap.

The first step in treating papules and pustules is to calm the inflammation. Applying ice twice a day will help reduce the pain and inflammation, and help prevent scarring and red or brown marks on the skin.

Will Vaseline Clog My Pores?

ACNE SKIN CARE TREATMENT IN CHICO, CA   916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC (530) 680.2027

The best product for treating raw skin is good old Petroleum Jelly. Acne treatment and/or acne skin care products can initially cause the skin to become a little raw around the crease of the nose, the nasolabial folds, and the corners of the mouth. Should this occur, it's important to keep the skin sealed and protected to prevent further irritation. Applying Petroleum Jelly to areas of irritation will do the trick and it will not clog your pores!

Salad Dressing for Acne Sufferers...

FOR ACNE SKIN CARE IN CHICO, CA   CONTACT  916SKIN - ANCE TREATMENT CLINIC

What does salad dressing have to do with acne? When you suffer from acne, treatment is not a one step process. Treating acne is multi-factorial, and you need to address it from all angles. This includes things such as skin care, managing stress, exposure to toxins, and nutrition. Strive for a clean diet by eating whole unprocessed foods, cutting out refined sugars, lowering your salt intake for many, and limiting dairy consumption.

Most grocery store salad dressings are filled with... crap! They are loaded with sugar, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, bad fats and ingredients that overload your body with toxins.

Next time you have a salad, whip up something clean in under 60 seconds: 5 parts olive oil, 1 part lemon juice and a dash of stevia (herbal sweetener). Whisk and mix with greens! It may take a while to get used to, but your body will thank you!

To find out if our Acne Treatment Program is right for you, please visit our website or call the clinic to schedule an acne consultation. (530)680.2027

If You Use Acne Products, You Need Sunscreen!!!

ACNE SKIN CARE CONSULTATIONS AVAILABLE AT 916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC.

Both acne skincare products and anti-aging skincare products can make skin more vulnerable to the sun's UV rays. Ultra Violet radiation (UV) is a known carcinogen. Both UVA and UVB have been linked to skin cancer, premature aging, compromised immunity as well as cataracts.

A study in the JAAD reported that up to 90% of the visible signs in aging skin are directly caused by chronic sun exposure.*

UVA rays, also known as “aging rays” are not absorbed by the ozone. UVA penetrates the deeper layers of skin, known as the dermis, breaking down collagen and elastin, which are the structures that give our skin its strength, resilience, and elasticity.

UVB rays, otherwise known as “burning rays,” penetrate the skin’s superficial layers, and are primarily responsible for suntan and sunburn. UVB rays are partially absorbed by the ozone layer, but with the thinning of the ozone, our skin is at greater risk from the effects of UVB radiation.

Professional sunscreens provide quality formulations that are created with different skin types in mind. When you purchase sunscreen, look to your local med spa, dermatologist or skin care clinic in Chico. Professional sunscreens offer higher concentrations of minerals than what is offered over-the-counter. And technology, has zinc and titanium sunscreens gliding on weightless and silky smooth for much more pleasing experience.

To determine which type of sunscreen is best for you, schedule a complimentary consultation with a skin health practitioner. (530) 680.2027

Can Peanut Butter Trigger Acne?

DRUG-FREE, ACNE TREATMENT PROGRAM in CHICO, CA... 916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC

Peanut products can influence androgen levels. Androgens are male hormones also found in women, but in smaller amounts. When eaten consistently, or in excess, peanut products can increase your oil production and trigger acne breakouts. Multiple cases have shown, that acne patients who discontinue their daily intake of peanut butter experience remission of acne in 1 to 3 weeks. So, if you are prone to acne, keep your intake of peanuts, peanut butter and peanut oil to a minimum. Better yet, reach for the almond butter instead.

Active and Inactive Ingredients for Acne

916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC... Drug-Free Acne Treatment Program in Chico, CA

Skin care product formulations, including acne care products, are divided up into two groups: active ingredients and inactive ingredients. Active ingredients are what provide you with results. They are action-driven ingredients. Skin that is acne-prone requires such actions as increased cell-turn-over, hydration, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial action. Whereas, inactive ingredients help preserve, deliver and give shelf appeal.

An effective acne skin care regime requires a acne system that has the correct active ingredients in the appropriate concentrations for your specific type of acne. This is where your Acne Specialist comes into play.

Does Picking at Zits Really Cause Scarring???

To treat acne in Chico, CA without the use of prescription medications, please visit the
916SKIN - Acne Treatment Clinic website.

Yes, picking can cause acne scars. Picking at your zits creates inflammation, which can cause the skin to darken in the area where you have picked, leaving a brown or a red mark - also known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Most acne sufferers that have PIH, refer to this as acne scarring, but true acne scars develop from an explosion of bacteria that contaminates the deeper tissues. The deeper layer of skin known as the epidermis is supposed to be neat and tidy. That means, no bacteria wandering around messing the place up. When you push and poke at a pimple, the bottom of the the follicle can break, spilling all of its bacteria into the dermis. Very messy. The clean up crew, which are your white blood cells, have to push all the other tissue structures out of the way in order to clean up the mess. This is what causes the scarring. Box scars, pick scars, rolling scars... basically scars that have an indentation. When you have the urge to pick at your pimples - go grab an ice cube instead. Ice will help reduce the inflammation and alleviate the pain.

Scrub-A-Dub-Dub Your Acne Away...

916SKIN - Acne Skin Care Clinic in Chico, California  provides acne products and acne care for mild to severe and cystic acne. For information on our Acne Treatment Program please visit our website.

Facial scrubs can be beneficial for those with blackheads, whiteheads, and non-sensitive skin. Make sure to use a scrub that has rounded granules or an ultra fine grit.

If you have any inflammation on your skin - forget about the scrub! First things first. If you have inflamed skin or inflamed acne lesions avoid scrubs and stick with a gentle cleanser. Scrubs will only irritate your skin and make your condition worse.

Pros & Cons of Cortisone Shots for Cystic Acne

Cystic acne treatment in Chico, Ca. without the use of prescription medications is available at 916SKIN... Acne & Wellness Clinic.

Cortisol is a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands - which sit on top of your kidneys. Cortisol helps regulate such events as exercise, blood sugar imbalances, and acute stress including inflammation.

Injectable cortisone is a synthetic product, but closely mimics your body's natural cortisol.  Dermatologists and health care practitioners may use cortisone injections as an anti-inflammatory to provide fast acting relief of the swelling and pain associated with nodular and cystic acne. Cortisone is injected directly into the cyst(s) or nodule(s).

PROS : Reduces inflammation and speeds the healing process.

CONS: Pain, tissue atrophy and hypopigmentation. Injections may be painful, but a topical numbing agent can help alleviate the pain. The tissue at the site of injection can atrophy (breakdown) and leave a depression mark in the skin. Over the course of a few months, the skin may return to its normal, healthy state. The skin may hypopigment (discolor/turn white) at the injection sites (see above photo). Hypopigmentation is permanent and can occur in both dark and light skin.

CYSTIC ACNE or NODULAR ACNE?

To treat cystic acne in Chico, Ca. without prescription medications please contact 916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC: 530.680.2027.

The terms nodule and cyst are often used interchangeably. While both nodules and cysts are similar in physical appearance and are both inflammatory acne lesions, their anatomical structures are different.

NODULAR ACNE:  A nodule is an inflammatory lesion that is deep. With a nodule, the bottom of the follicle erupts and the inflammation extends down into the dermis, or even as deep as the subcutaneous fatty layer. A nodule forms a painful lump in the skin, firm to the touch, that can be greater than 0.5 - 1cm in width and in depth.1,2  Nodules may come and go over the course of weeks or even months.3

CYSTIC ACNE: A cyst is an inflammatory acne lesion that has a sac-like structure formed by epithelial cells. Cysts can develop when several follicles rupture and combine to form one large lesion about the size of the tip of your little finger. Cysts can also develop from severe inflammation of one follicle. Cysts are typically pus filled, made up of cellular debris, white blood cells, oil and bacteria . The contents of a cyst can be liquid, semi-solid, or solid.4  Cysts tend to be 1 to 5cm (yes, centimeters!) in size with a prominent central pore, and are most commonly found behind the ears and along the eyebrows.3
