The Effects of Topical Acne Products & Birth Control Pills on Photosensitivity

To ensure you are using the correct products to treat acne in Chico, California, please schedule an acne consultation by calling 530-680-2027

Many topical acne products as well as birth control pills cause photosensitivity (sensitivity to the sun/light). When used simultaneously, the outcome can do more harm than good if the proper precautions aren't taken.  This includes increasing your risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and set backs in getting clear. The best precaution is to avoid the sun. If this isn't possible, limit your sun exposure, wear hats, wear an SPF with at least 7% zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, reapply sunscreen every two hours, and where your sunscreen even on cloudy or rainy days. If you're unable to take these precautions, it is better to not use photosensitizing skin care products the day before and the day of sun exposure. In some cases, it is better not to use the acne product at all because the risks out weigh the benefits.

Best Acne Treatment in Chico

Treatment for adult acne in Chico, California is available through 916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic. On average, it takes 12 to 16 weeks to get clear. Please visit our website to learn more about our acne treatment program as well as our long distance program for acne management. 530.680.2027

The best acne skin care regime is one that uses the least amount of products at the lowest concentration to get you clear and keep you clear. The only side effects of such a regime should be those that are harmless.  Keep in mind, that in order to get clear and stay clear, it is often necessary to use a complete skin care system - one that may consist of many steps. Often times, staying clear requires advancing to more aggressive topical products.  That being said, everyone is different, and while your friend requires benzoyle peroxide at 2% to get clear, you may require benzoyle peroxide at 10% to achieve the same result. The best course of action is to find an acne doctor or an acne specialist that will provide you with a comprehensive consultation in order to cover the diverse aspects that underlie your acneic condition. Time is key here...  Time to build trust with your practitioner. Time to learn new habits. Time to adapt to new products. Time for your skin to heal. When you get discouraged, just remember... how much time you will save when you don't have to wear make-up anymore, when you don't spend an hour in front of the mirror every night picking, or when you don't cry yourself to sleep because you were too embarrassed to go to the movies with your friends. Yes, time is the key that will turn the lock to a new way of experiencing life!

Treating Teen Acne

Treat teen acne in Chico at 916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic. We treat acne without the use of prescription medication. Our patients are getting clear in 12 to 16 weeks.
530.680.2027

The best place to start with teens is to GET ON A ROUTINE. Get in the habit of washing your face every morning and every night. Stay away from Sea Breeze, and other stripping toners. Stay away from anything that burns, irritates, or turns your skin red. Moisturize with a water based, oil free lotion.  If you are truly prone to acne, it will take more than cleansing and moisturizing to get clear, but this is a good place to start. Try it for 2 months, if it doesn't work - then come see me.

Do X-Rays Help Treat Acne?

To effectively treat acne without the use of prescription drugs, please call and schedule a consultation with our acne specialist.  530.680.2027

In the 1920's x-rays were an acceptable method for treating acne, temporarily shrinking the sebaceous (oil) glands. Studies later revealed no improvement in using this method. Decades later, hundreds on former acne patients began developing skin cancers and thyroid cancer from their x-ray treatments. One patient developed 140 individual skin cancers that as a result of his radiation treatments.

Do Oily Foods Cause Oily Skin???

For more information on our acne clearing process, please call to schedule your consultation.
530.680.2027

Oily acne skin is influenced by genetics and hormones. Acne, is in part, triggered by a lipid dysfunction of the skin. Even if you are sneaking into the restroom every couple of hours to blot your face with toilet seat covers - those of you who do do this know what I'm talking about - your body still needs healthy fats for your skin to function properly. Try nuts, seeds, and cold water fish, as well as sesame, olive, flax, and evening primrose oils in salad dressings or for spiking your french baguette. Bon appetit!

Acne Product Management...

At 916SKIN - Acne & Wellness Clinic, we manage your acne products and home-care regimen with bimonthly consultations to get your skin clear and to keep it clear.

How many times have you used a product that gets you clear, for a while at least, then you start breaking out again? I hear this story over and over again from my patients. Your skin will eventually adapt to the products that you are using if it is not challenged enough.  There is a fine line between challenging your skin and not over irritating it. To get clear and stay clear, you need to maintain your balance on that fine line. You need to keep your pores sloughed and cleared without over drying or over irritating your skin - not an easy task.  That's where we come in!

For help managing your acne, please contact the clinic at 530.680.2027

Topical C & Benzoyl Peroxide...

Topical Vitamin C (10% L-Ascorbic Acid) is available through 916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic. Topical C can be ordered over the phone and shipped out the same day - free of charge.

While benzoyl peroxide is often a necessity for clearing acne topically, it also has its draw backs. Benzoyl peroxide causes free radical damage, the very same thing we try to prevent in the aging process. Topical L-Ascorbic Acid, not only stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin for firm and resilient skin, but it also neutralizes free radicals caused from such things as benzoyl peroxide and sun exposure. Topical L-Ascorbic Acid also works synergistically with sunscreen to reduce the formation of sunburned cells.

Topical L-Ascorbic Acid is a must have for keeping skin tight and right! I apply 10% L-ascorbic acid every day and every night - rain or shine. When researching topical L-Ascorbic Acid, look for the following: a product that is in the form of a serum, lists L-ascorbic acid as one of the first ingredients, is water based, contains no alcohol or witch hazel, and has hydrating ingredients such as sodium PCA, glycerin, or sodium hyaluronate.

Clarisonic vs. Revlon Facial Brush...

916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic carries Clarisonic Classic, Clarisonic Plus, Clarisonic Pro, as well as the Clarisonic Mia. Purchases can be made at the clinic, by phone, or by visiting our on-line store. Clarisonic ships FREE of charge!

In short, Clarisonic oscillates at 300 times per second using sonic frequency to gently loosen grit and grime from the day.  With the Revlon Facial Brush, the entire brush head rotates pulling and tugging at your skin. It may feel fine when you're using using it, but anything that pulls at your skin, day after day, will eventually breakdown the elastic fibers that keep you looking young. Do your skin a favor and invest in a Clarisonic!

Apricot Scrub and Acne...

916SKIN is an acne center serving Sacramento, Auburn, Redding, Chico and other surrounding areas. We also have a long distance acne program that is getting amazing results.

Sometimes I have to try really hard not to be a skin care snob, but Apricot Scrub...  Seriously, you might as well be using 50 grade sandpaper. It may be super smooth and squeaky clean afterwards, but keep up that habit and you'll encounter another skin enemy called "premature aging." Scrubs can be great for people with thick, oily, nonsensitive, noninflamed acne, but you need to use the correct scrub. Choose a scrub that is gentle with rounded beads or crystals to prevent over abrading your precious skin.

Skin Tinu discontinued their eye creams so we have introduced new eye treatments for our acne patients. Our Vitamin C products are great for smoothing fine lines and improving tone and evenness. I use my vitamin C every morning and every night.  I never go without it. And over the past year I have seen the lines around my eyes fade away!

How To Get Rid Of Acne...

At 916SKIN, we teach you how to get rid of acne through in-office acne treatments, medical-grade home care acne products, lifestyle changes, and hormonal guidance.
CONSULTATIONS: 530.680.2027

There are times when treating acne can be as simple as learning which acne products to use and how to use them. Treating acne is not a "one size fits all" solution. This is why certain acne systems work for some, but not for others. Your acne may require massive exfoliation while your friend's acne requires major antibacterial action. Everyone is different, and where ever you decide to go to seek help, you will want to make sure that the person treating you shares this philosophy.

Is PCA Active Sunscreen Good For Those With Acne?

If you are oily and prone to acne, PCA SKIN Active Sunscreen may feel great going on because it's so light and non-greasy, but beware, as great as this sunscreen feels it contains sodium chloride, and should be avoided by those with acne. If you have acne, try PCA Weightless protection instead.  It too is light, non-greasy, has a matte finish, and is perfect for acneic skin.

Weightless Protection is also available at our acne treatment center in Chico, 916SKIN.

Keep your hands off your face!!!

At 916SKIN, we treat acne without the use of prescription medication. Our acne program is designed to get patients clear in 12 to 16 weeks.

Now, about keeping your hands off your face...
Treating acne is multi-factorial, and there are many things you can do to help control the disease. You can start by keeping your hands off of your face! Most of us don't realize just how much we touch our face throughout the day. When patients initially come into the clinic, I will point out that they keep touching their face. By the time their next visit rolls around, they often tell me they were surprised by how often they caught themselves touching their face once I brought it to their attention. We do it when we're nervous, when we study, when we have an itch, or sometimes for no reason at all.  Bacteria exists on your skin... and in your follicles (pores) no matter how well you cleanse, but keeping your hands off of your face is one more step you can take towards controling the bacteria, and controlling your acne.

About Accutane (Isotretinoin)

916 Acne, Skin & Wellness is an acne clinic in Northern California. We successfully treat acne without the use of prescription medications, and offer a long distance program for those throughout the U.S..  On average, our patients get clear in 3 to 4 months.
ACNE CONSULTATIONS: 530.680.2027

What is Isotretinoin?
Isotretinoin ((13cis)-retinoic acid)) is a derivative of vitamin A, commonly known as Accutane, or generically Asmnesteem, Claravis, and Sotret.

How Does Isotretinoin (Accutane) Work:
Isotretinoin impedes cellular reproduction (cell growth) and oil-gland function. Isotretinoin also depletes the body's water-holding molecules, which help lubricate and protect tissue in the skin, scalp, eyes and joints.

What You Should Know About Isotretinoin:
Isotretinoin (Accutane) is FDA approved to treat severe, nodular acne that has not been helped by other treatments, including antibiotics. Although it is commonly prescribed to treat less severe acne, including mild acne, it is NOT FDA approved for this purpose.

Isotretinoin may cause serious mental health problem including depression, psychosis, and suicide. In an effort to regulate teratogenicity and reduce fetal malformation, the FDA has implemented a program called iPLEDGE™ to restrict the distribution of Isotretinoin. Isotretinoin must only be prescribed by those registered and activated with the iPLEDGE program. Isotretinoin must only be dispensed by a pharmacy registered and activated with iPLEDGE, and must only be dispensed to patients who are registered and meet all the requirements of iPLEDGE.

For more information on Isotretinoin, view the Medication Guide at: http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/ucm085729.htm scroll down and click on Accutane.

Will Glycolic Acid Help My Breakouts?

916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Studio offers glycolic acid for acne. 916 offers glycolic acid 5% and glycolic acid 10% in a water based serum.  To ensure that you receive the correct products for your type of acne, and understand how to use them properly, all acne products at 916 require a consultation prior to purchase.

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane.  It has a shorter carbon chain than other alpha hydroxies.  It consists of 2 carbons, which allows it to penetrate quicker and deeper. And although it is more effective at controlling oil than mandelic, it can also cause more irritation.  Not everyone is a candidate for glycolic. And in many cases, glycolic is a product that you work up to - rather than start out on. Irritation causes dryness, and dryness causes breakouts - so better to start conservatively and avoid potential breakouts!

What Type of Acne is the Hardest to Treat???

Acne care in Chico, California is available at 916SKIN.  916 is an acne clinic treating grades 1 through 4 acne vulgaris through bimonthly acne treatments and a customized, progressive, topical home care routine.  Most patients experience immediate improvement, and are completely clear within 12 to 16 weeks.  ACNE CONSULTATIONS: 530.680.2027

Grade 2 acne is the most difficult to treat. Grade 2 acne consists mainly of whiteheads - tiny impacted bumps that make the skin feel bumpy and grainy.  The follicular/pore opening on whiteheads is in some cases very tiny, which makes it difficult to do extractions.  Grade 2 patients need massive exfoliation - Clarisonic, scrub, hydroxy acids, vitamin A products, and often times other peeling agents.  Grade 2 acne takes the longest to get clear, so, not only do they need massive exfoliation, they need a lot of patience.

Foods That Cause Acne!!!

Acne care in Chico, California is available at 916SKIN - Acne, Skin & Wellness Studio. For more information on acne facts & myths visit our website at http://www.916skin.com/. Acne consultations are available for local and long distance patients: 530.680.2027.

What causes acne? Genetics.  However, if you have a genetic predisposition for acne there are many other things that can trigger your breakouts including foods that are known to spike your androgens.  Androgens are male-type hormones such as testosterone and DHEA that are found in both men and women.  Try to avoid the following foods: peanuts, peanut oil, peanut butter, corn oil, wheat germ, shellfish, organ meats, sweetbreads, beef and liver. These influence hormones that can exacerbate acne. Eating something off of this list occasionally probably won't have much of an affect, but I have had patients who got clear instantly once they kicked their daily peanut butter habit.

Tiny Hairs On My Nose or Blackheads???

Acnemanagement, blackhead removal and deep pore cleansing in Chico is available at 916SKIN - Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic. ACNE CONSULTATIONS: 530.680.2027

If you see tiny little black or brown hairs growing on the surface of your skin... look again, they may be blackheads! The proper name is microfilaments.  Microfilaments are similar to blackheads except their structure looks like that of a tiny hair or splinter. If you are able to remove it with tweezers you may notice there is no root ball at the end of the filament as you would see on a hair.

With the correct treatment to prepare the skin and loosen the follicular debris, microfilaments can be removed quite successfully - leaving you with a clean, smooth, healthy looking nose.  Often times, the nose can be extremely sensitive, and many people can't tolerate the extractions. In this case, we remove what we can from the follicles (pores)... depending on what you can tolerate, and send you home with products that will clear the microfilaments over time. Proper cleansing, use of a Clarisonic Facial Brush, and exfoliants are all  very important in clearing those impactions.  Be patient... using products alone can take up to 3 to 6 months to get results.

"One Man's Meat Is Another Man's Poison"

Can chemical and food sensitivities cause acne? Although genetics is the underlying cause of acne, diet plays a critical role in preventing a wide range of degenerative diseases and premature aging including many skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema. Knowing what you are sensitive or intolerant to can help alleviate numerous conditions such as digestive disorders, migraines, obesity, chronic fatigue, aching joints, autism, acne and other skin disorders, and many more.  At 916SKIN, we use the ALCAT test, which tests for sensitivities to foods, functional foods, herbs, food additives, food colorings, molds, and environmental chemicals. By eliminating (in some cases rotating) what you are sensitive or intolerant of can have a dramatic affect on your skin and on your health.  Following a customized protocol will enhance your health and improve your quality of life.

To schedule an ALCAT consultation or testing please contact the clinic.
