The Effects of Topical Acne Products & Birth Control Pills on Photosensitivity

To ensure you are using the correct products to treat acne in Chico, California, please schedule an acne consultation by calling 530-680-2027

Many topical acne products as well as birth control pills cause photosensitivity (sensitivity to the sun/light). When used simultaneously, the outcome can do more harm than good if the proper precautions aren't taken.  This includes increasing your risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and set backs in getting clear. The best precaution is to avoid the sun. If this isn't possible, limit your sun exposure, wear hats, wear an SPF with at least 7% zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, reapply sunscreen every two hours, and where your sunscreen even on cloudy or rainy days. If you're unable to take these precautions, it is better to not use photosensitizing skin care products the day before and the day of sun exposure. In some cases, it is better not to use the acne product at all because the risks out weigh the benefits.
