We can try to embrace the aging process, but let's face it - seeing your skin change practically over night is a drag. As we get older, our production of hormones begin to decline and we gradually reach the end of our reproductive cycle. We start gaining weight, our hair begins to lose its luster, sound sleep becomes harder to get, we become bitchy, maybe itchy, our libido drops off, and almost over night, our skin begins to wither. And just when we thought we were in the clear, we start getting breakouts due to an androgen imbalance - oh joy. The majority of women begin noticing the onset of some of these changes in their 30's, but for many women, these subtle changes become recognizable as early as their late 20's.

Sex, Lies & Menopause by T.S.Wiley - The Shocking Truth About Hormone Replacement Therapy is an essential read for all perimenopausal and menopausal women. If you are considering hormone replacement therapy, I urge you to read this book. I found it to be a little dry, but it's an important read so pushed through. Suzanne Somers, breast cancer survivor, has several books that discuss hormone replacement therapy. She is incredibly knowledgeable, and her books are educational AND entertaining.

What type of sunscreen is best for acne-prone skin?

Acne skin care products can leave your skin more vulnerable to the sun, and without the proper protection, can increase your risk for skin cancer. Used properly, the correct acne skin care system can do wonders for clearing your skin, but without UV protection, your products will do more harm than good – in the long run.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States with over 1 million people diagnosed each year. Although skin cancer is highly preventable through proper protection, an estimated 65% of melanoma skin cancers, and a whopping  90% of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to the sun’s UV radiation.*

916SKIN - Acne Skin Care Clinic serving Sacramento, Ca., and surrounding areas will help you choose products that help you feel great and will not clog your pores - that's a promise!

Physical Sunscreen for Sensitive Skin and Acne

Wearing a quality sunscreen, everyday, is the best form of anti-aging skin care in Chico, Ca.  Those using acne products in Chico, Ca also require daily sunscreen to protect you from skin cancer and premature aging.

Occasionally patients experience reactions to chemical sunscreens, particularly those with  para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and/or benzophenones.  If you have sensitive skin, or are prone to skin reactions, it is best to purchase "physical" sunscreens, which use titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, and are not known to cause irritation. To amp up the level of protection, look for a sunscreen that contains at least 7% zinc or titanium. Professional sunscreen formulations have become so sophisticated that the "once upon a time pasty zinc oxide" can be thrown out for good. The new formulations glide onto the skin weightless, silky smooth, any offering well over 7% zinc and titanium  - this is not an exaggeration!

Ultra Violet radiation (UV) is a known carcinogen, and both UVA and UVB have been linked to skin cancer, premature aging, compromised immunity, and cataracts.

A study in the JAAD reported that up to 90% of the visible signs in aging skin are directly caused by chronic sun exposer.*   UVA rays, also known as “aging rays” are not absorbed by the ozone.  UVA penetrates the deeper layers of skin, known as the dermis, breaking down the structures that give our skin strength, resilience, and elasticity.  UVB rays, otherwise known as the “burning rays,” penetrate the skin’s superficial layers, and are primarily responsible for sunburn. UVB rays are partially absorbed by the ozone layer, but with the thinning of the ozone, our skin is at greater risk from the effects of UVB radiation.

Scary Fact: UVA and UVB rays have both been linked to cataracts. Cataracts affect nearly 22 million Americans age 40 and up. By the age of 80, more than 50% of all Americans have cataracts. Direct medical costs for cataract treatment are estimated at $6.8 billion annually.  Wear your sunglasses people!

Should I Avoid Fat If I'm Breaking Out?

916SKIN is an Acne Treatment Clinic serving Chico, Red Bluff, Redding, Auburn, Grass Valley, Tahoe and Sacramento, CA. For more information please call the acne clinic at (530) 680.2027.

"Should I avoid fat if I'm breaking out?" One of the first things people do when they start breaking out is to cut out the fat. Acne, is partly due to a lipid deficiency. Our body's need fat! Our hormones are composed of fats. Our cell membranes are made up of fats... preferably, good fats! Denying yourself this valuable nutrient is denying your self optimal health. The next time you are trying to lose weight or battle a break out, say "bye-bye" to ice cream, cheese, tempura, potato chips, and french fries, and say "hello" to fish oil, olive oil,  grape seed oil, primrose oil, flax seed oil, avocado oil, and sesame seed oil.

In short, avoid "bad fats" and consume plenty of "good fats" also know as EFA's (essential fatty acids). Now, eat up!

Acne: Alleviate Flaky Skin

916SKIN IS ACNE SKIN CARE CLINIC IN CHICO, CA. TO SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION PLEASE CALL: ( 530) 680.2027.

In the skin care category... applying makeup over flaky skin has got to rank in the top 5 for "most annoying occurrences." For those using prescription exfoliants or an aggressive acne skin care regime, avoid wash clothes, loofahs, and the like as they only irritate the skin. Clarisonic Skin Cleansing Brushes and massaging skin with your hands will help; however, not all acne types benefit from these methods.

Based on the feedback of many patients and my own experience, nothing works better than the "water massage." After a thorough cleanse, moisten your face with water and begin massaging your skin with your finger tips using circular motions. As the water evaporates, your finger tips become tacky, and the dead skin will begin lifting - don't rinse just yet. Allow the dead skin cells to ball up under your finger tips and slough off more dead skin. Once your face dries, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat - as needed.

This de-shedding process may take from 1 to 5 minutes depending on how much your skin needs to shed. The "water massage" can be done morning or night, but most prefer the mornings so that makeup goes on silky smooth.
