How Does Benzoyl Peroxide Work?

ACNE SKIN CARE CONSULTATION      916SKIN - ACNE TREATMENT CLINIC

Benzoyl peroxide was discovered in the 1920's for its ability to kill bacteria. It is made up of two benzoyls and a peroxide molecule, which metabolize into benzoic acid and oxygen. It is the oxygen component of the molecule that wipes out the bacteria (P. acnes), and helps control acne. Although the bacteria are killed on contact, the pimple may linger for quite some time, due in part, to inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide is also a peeling agent. It peels away dead cells on the skin's surface and inside the pilosebaceous glands (pores).

Dermatologists and acne skin care experts have utilized benzoyl peroxide to help treat many forms of acne. Benzoyl peroxide, by itself, will not treat acne. Acne needs to be treated from many angles with a variety of products chosen specifically for your condition.
