Is Benzoyl Peroxide Aging Your Skin?

ACNE SKIN CARE CLINIC IN CHICO, CA   916SKIN - ACNE CLINIC (530) 503.9169

There is an ongoing debate in the skin care industry as to whether benzoyl peroxide (BPO) causes premature aging. Two expert dermatologists give opposing views.

Katie Rodan, M.D., dermatologist and co-developer of the acne skin care line, Proactive, says no. Dr. Rodan states that regular use of BPO has shown no signs of premature aging, regardless of its concentration. Rodan also says she has not come across any studies that suggest otherwise. Debra Luftman, M.D., Dermatologist and developer of the acne skin care line, Therapeutix, says yes. Dr. Luftman reports that even though, there have not been any long term studies on the effects of BPO on skin aging, BPO is partially made up of oxygen, which we know is a main culprit of free radical damage. To receive the anti-acne benefits of BPO, while receiving the synergistic affects of anti-oxidants, long term use of BPO should be accompanied with a non-comedogenic, pharmeceutical strength, topical vitamin C-serum.
