According to a study by the Department of Dermatology at Emory University Grand Rounds, hand held umbrellas, do in fact, offer protection from ultra violet radiation.
Researchers at the University gathered 23 hand held umbrellas of various colors, sizes and brands. Umbrellas used in the study were in good condition and had no obvious holes, rips or tears. Using an ultra violet meter to measure UVA and UVB rays, the umbrellas were tested under blue skies for their ability to block UV rays. The results show that hand held umbrellas block between 77% and 99% of UV radiation.
