The Effects of Topical Acne Products & Birth Control Pills on Photosensitivity

To ensure you are using the correct products to treat acne in Chico, California, please schedule an acne consultation by calling 530-680-2027

Many topical acne products as well as birth control pills cause photosensitivity (sensitivity to the sun/light). When used simultaneously, the outcome can do more harm than good if the proper precautions aren't taken.  This includes increasing your risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and set backs in getting clear. The best precaution is to avoid the sun. If this isn't possible, limit your sun exposure, wear hats, wear an SPF with at least 7% zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, reapply sunscreen every two hours, and where your sunscreen even on cloudy or rainy days. If you're unable to take these precautions, it is better to not use photosensitizing skin care products the day before and the day of sun exposure. In some cases, it is better not to use the acne product at all because the risks out weigh the benefits.

Best Acne Treatment in Chico

Treatment for adult acne in Chico, California is available through 916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic. On average, it takes 12 to 16 weeks to get clear. Please visit our website to learn more about our acne treatment program as well as our long distance program for acne management. 530.680.2027

The best acne skin care regime is one that uses the least amount of products at the lowest concentration to get you clear and keep you clear. The only side effects of such a regime should be those that are harmless.  Keep in mind, that in order to get clear and stay clear, it is often necessary to use a complete skin care system - one that may consist of many steps. Often times, staying clear requires advancing to more aggressive topical products.  That being said, everyone is different, and while your friend requires benzoyle peroxide at 2% to get clear, you may require benzoyle peroxide at 10% to achieve the same result. The best course of action is to find an acne doctor or an acne specialist that will provide you with a comprehensive consultation in order to cover the diverse aspects that underlie your acneic condition. Time is key here...  Time to build trust with your practitioner. Time to learn new habits. Time to adapt to new products. Time for your skin to heal. When you get discouraged, just remember... how much time you will save when you don't have to wear make-up anymore, when you don't spend an hour in front of the mirror every night picking, or when you don't cry yourself to sleep because you were too embarrassed to go to the movies with your friends. Yes, time is the key that will turn the lock to a new way of experiencing life!

The best place to start with teens is to GET ON A ROUTINE. Get in the habit of washing your face every morning and every night. Stay away from Sea Breeze, and other stripping toners. Stay away from anything that burns, irritates, or turns your skin red. Moisturize with a water based, oil free lotion.  If you are truly prone to acne, it will take more than cleansing and moisturizing to get clear, but this is a good place to start. Try it for 2 months, if it doesn't work - then come see me.

Do X-Rays Help Treat Acne?

To effectively treat acne without the use of prescription drugs, please call and schedule a consultation with our acne specialist.  530.680.2027

In the 1920's x-rays were an acceptable method for treating acne, temporarily shrinking the sebaceous (oil) glands. Studies later revealed no improvement in using this method. Decades later, hundreds on former acne patients began developing skin cancers and thyroid cancer from their x-ray treatments. One patient developed 140 individual skin cancers that as a result of his radiation treatments.

Do Oily Foods Cause Oily Skin???

For more information on our acne clearing process, please call to schedule your consultation.
530.680.2027

Oily acne skin is influenced by genetics and hormones. Acne, is in part, triggered by a lipid dysfunction of the skin. Even if you are sneaking into the restroom every couple of hours to blot your face with toilet seat covers - those of you who do do this know what I'm talking about - your body still needs healthy fats for your skin to function properly. Try nuts, seeds, and cold water fish, as well as sesame, olive, flax, and evening primrose oils in salad dressings or for spiking your french baguette. Bon appetit!

Acne Product Management...

At 916SKIN - Acne & Wellness Clinic, we manage your acne products and home-care regimen with bimonthly consultations to get your skin clear and to keep it clear.

How many times have you used a product that gets you clear, for a while at least, then you start breaking out again? I hear this story over and over again from my patients. Your skin will eventually adapt to the products that you are using if it is not challenged enough.  There is a fine line between challenging your skin and not over irritating it. To get clear and stay clear, you need to maintain your balance on that fine line. You need to keep your pores sloughed and cleared without over drying or over irritating your skin - not an easy task.  That's where we come in!

Topical C & Benzoyl Peroxide...

Topical Vitamin C (10% L-Ascorbic Acid) is available through 916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic. Topical C can be ordered over the phone and shipped out the same day - free of charge.

While benzoyl peroxide is often a necessity for clearing acne topically, it also has its draw backs. Benzoyl peroxide causes free radical damage, the very same thing we try to prevent in the aging process. Topical L-Ascorbic Acid, not only stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin for firm and resilient skin, but it also neutralizes free radicals caused from such things as benzoyl peroxide and sun exposure. Topical L-Ascorbic Acid also works synergistically with sunscreen to reduce the formation of sunburned cells.

Topical L-Ascorbic Acid is a must have for keeping skin tight and right! I apply 10% L-ascorbic acid every day and every night - rain or shine. When researching topical L-Ascorbic Acid, look for the following: a product that is in the form of a serum, lists L-ascorbic acid as one of the first ingredients, is water based, contains no alcohol or witch hazel, and has hydrating ingredients such as sodium PCA, glycerin, or sodium hyaluronate.

Clarisonic vs. Revlon Facial Brush...

916 Acne, Skin & Wellness Clinic carries Clarisonic Classic, Clarisonic Plus, Clarisonic Pro, as well as the Clarisonic Mia. Purchases can be made at the clinic, by phone, or by visiting our on-line store. Clarisonic ships FREE of charge!

In short, Clarisonic oscillates at 300 times per second using sonic frequency to gently loosen grit and grime from the day.  With the Revlon Facial Brush, the entire brush head rotates pulling and tugging at your skin. It may feel fine when you're using using it, but anything that pulls at your skin, day after day, will eventually breakdown the elastic fibers that keep you looking young. Do your skin a favor and invest in a Clarisonic!

Apricot Scrub and Acne...

916SKIN is an acne center serving Sacramento, Auburn, Redding, Chico and other surrounding areas. We also have a long distance acne program that is getting amazing results.

Sometimes I have to try really hard not to be a skin care snob, but Apricot Scrub...  Seriously, you might as well be using 50 grade sandpaper. It may be super smooth and squeaky clean afterwards, but keep up that habit and you'll encounter another skin enemy called "premature aging." Scrubs can be great for people with thick, oily, nonsensitive, noninflamed acne, but you need to use the correct scrub. Choose a scrub that is gentle with rounded beads or crystals to prevent over abrading your precious skin.
