Estrogen plays an important part in the vitality of our skin. As we age into our 20's, 30's, and 40's, estrogen levels begin to decline. Estrogen keeps our skin soft, supple, resilient, and firm by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in our perimenopausal years (premenopause). Due to its high number of estrogen receptors, our face is typically the first place we begin to see our skin age as estrogen levels decline. Like it, or not, we are all headed for Menopause Lane. Don't get sassy boys, you men are all headed for Andropause Lane (AKA: male menopause). Along this road, creases get deeper, tone becomes dull, and skin develops a crepe-like texture (a lot like chicken skin). Decreasing levels of estrogen can create an imbalance with your androgens (male hormones also found in women at lower levels). An androgen imbalance can trigger acne flare-ups regardless of age.
