CAN TOXICITY CAUSE ACNE...

Yes, toxic overload can cause acne in Chico! Most have heard of "detoxing", but what does it mean to be toxic?

We rely on our liver to breakdown harmful substances (toxins) and convert them into harmless molecules. This is an elaborate, nutrient-dependent process known as detoxification.

When our liver becomes over burdened with incoming toxins, they get stored in the body to be detoxified at a later date. But, often times, that later date never arrives and our liver becomes so backed up with incoming crap, our bodies become toxic waste facilities. Toxicity can lead to numerous health problem and skin disorders, especially inflamed acne.

EXAMPLES OF TOXINS: prescription medications, certain vitamins, hormones-like substances, heavy metals, cleaning products, gas, coal, smoke, polluted air, asbestos, plastics, hydrofluoric acid, chlorine, fluorine, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, free radicals, waste products of pathogens in our body, certain natural flavorings and preservatives found in processed food and beverages.

MANAGING TOXIC OVERLOAD...

Managing your acne in Chico can turn toxic over the long Thanksgiving weekend. It's not just the pie and whipped cream that triggers breakouts, but the over indulging in ALL the Thanksgiving fixings. Overeating puts extra demands on your liver to detoxify. When the liver can't keep up with these demands, your body can experience toxic overload, which leads to acne flare-ups.

Take 2 days to detoxify and reboot your system. Drink lemon water, eat steamed veggies and small portions of left over turkey, not ham. This will allow your liver to focus on breaking down Thanksgiving toxins without being burdened by new, incoming toxins.

UV AND ACNE SCARRING...

Acne scars in Chico in the form of dark spots are exacerbated by ultra violet light (UV).

Slathering on sunscreen in the winter months is just as important as slathering it on during summer months. UV rays are still present during winter. They reflect off of roads, cars, buildings, sidewalks and onto our skin. UV penetrates clouds and glass. Protecting your skin from UV rays is one of the cheapest ways to keep looking younger.

Protecting your acne from UV rays is one of the best ways to prevent dark marks, otherwise known as post-hyperpigmentation, or what some refer to as acne scarring.

Look for sunscreen formulations that provide at least 8% zinc oxide. Image Skincare offers a formulation with a whopping 18 percent!

SWAP THE DAIRY...

When it comes to food, one of the biggest acne triggers in Chico is dairy. Even the things one might consider healthy like raw, organic milk and cultured yogurt, are triggers. For those who don't have a genetic predisposition towards acne, it's not a problem, but if you battle with breakouts - it's time to drop the dairy.

It's the cow hormones that stimulate oil glands, so eggs are alright to eat, and aren't considered dairy, anyway.

Fortunately, there are a lot of tasty alternatives these days... almond milk, soy milk, rice milk, hemp milk. These are all great replacements that will get you one step closer to being acne-free. Even a little dairy in your coffee can trigger breakouts. Be cautious of hidden dairy in items like protein bars, salad dressings, smoothies, pastries, and pancakes (this is good spot to mention coffee, sugar & high glycemic index foods/drinks are all acne triggers).

PREVENT COLD WEATHER ACNE FLARE-UPS...

Clients tend to get acne flare-ups in Chico - during colder months. Winter climates tend to dry out skin, and with that, comes the potential for breakouts.

Keeping acne-prone skin hydrated is not only necessary to speed healing, but helps prevent breakouts due to overly dry skin.

Using a hydrating gel followed by an acne lotion formulated to lock in moisture, and topped off with a moisturizing sunscreen will help prevent acne flare-ups. And of course, all of these are available in oil free formulations!

OIL VS. WATER TO HYDRATE ACNE...

You can have an oily skin type and dehydrated skin.
You can have a dry skin type and hydrated skin.

The reason for the confusion is that many people think oil hydrates the skin. In actuality, it is water and water-binding molecules that hydrate the skin. The oil acts as a seal to lock in existing moisture - if moisture is present, in the first place.

If you have oily skin, don't be afraid of
hydrating acne products in Chico.
As long as they are for oily acne-prone skin,
and hopefully from a reputable Acne Clinic,
they will function to speed the healing process
and help prevent breakouts.

DO OVER-THE-COUNTER PRODUCTS WORK...

Using over-the-counter acne products in Chico to wipe out zits will most likely leave your skin irritated and more prone to break-outs. Different types of acne and different types of skin require different ingredients and concentrations in order to be effective.

Applying the latest and the greatest acne product often leaves skin overly dry and scaly, which potentially leads to MORE breakouts.

Ingredients, concentration, product layering, and how often products are applied - changes as your skin begins to heal. To get results, you need a skincare regimen that is tailored specifically for you, and one that changes over time.
