The best place to start with teens is to GET ON A ROUTINE. Get in the habit of washing your face every morning and every night. Stay away from Sea Breeze, and other stripping toners. Stay away from anything that burns, irritates, or turns your skin red. Moisturize with a water based, oil free lotion.  If you are truly prone to acne, it will take more than cleansing and moisturizing to get clear, but this is a good place to start. Try it for 2 months, if it doesn't work - then come see me.

In the 1920's x-rays were an acceptable method for treating acne, temporarily shrinking the sebaceous (oil) glands. Studies later revealed no improvement in using this method. Decades later, hundreds on former acne patients began developing skin cancers and thyroid cancer from their x-ray treatments. One patient developed 140 individual skin cancers that as a result of his radiation treatments.

Oily acne skin is influenced by genetics and hormones. Acne, is in part, triggered by a lipid dysfunction of the skin. Even if you are sneaking into the restroom every couple of hours to blot your face with toilet seat covers - those of you who do do this know what I'm talking about - your body still needs healthy fats for your skin to function properly. Try nuts, seeds, and cold water fish, as well as sesame, olive, flax, and evening primrose oils in salad dressings or for spiking your french baguette. Bon appetit!

While benzoyl peroxide is often a necessity for clearing acne topically, it also has its draw backs. Benzoyl peroxide causes free radical damage, the very same thing we try to prevent in the aging process. Topical L-Ascorbic Acid, not only stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin for firm and resilient skin, but it also neutralizes free radicals caused from such things as benzoyl peroxide and sun exposure. Topical L-Ascorbic Acid also works synergistically with sunscreen to reduce the formation of sunburned cells.

Sometimes I have to try really hard not to be a skin care snob, but Apricot Scrub...  Seriously, you might as well be using 50 grade sandpaper. It may be super smooth and squeaky clean afterwards, but keep up that habit and you'll encounter another skin enemy called "premature aging." Scrubs can be great for people with thick, oily, nonsensitive, noninflamed acne, but you need to use the correct scrub. Choose a scrub that is gentle with rounded beads or crystals to prevent over abrading your precious skin.
