Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a darkening of the skin in response to inflammation. PIH can occur in the epidermis (upper layers of skin) or the dermis (deeper layers of skin) due to inflammatory molecules stimulating the production of pigment. There are many factors that can cause the skin to become inflamed such as allergic reactions, mechanical abrasions, infections, sun burns, chemical burns, medications, diseases, various traumas, and of coarse... acne. Simply put, inflammation causes scarring.

In the case of acne, any acne lesion that has a red base has the potential to scar. This is why applying ice, morning and night to inflamed acne, can be critical in controlling PIH. Dr. Fulton refers to ice as the "secret sauce." Other topical anti-inflammatories can also be helpful.
