Always use a professional sunscreen purchased from a licensed skin care professional or dermatologist. Professional sunscreens contain higher active ingredients than over-the-counter sunscreens, thereby, providing greater protection from damaging UV rays.  Save the Banana Boat and other over-the-counter sunscreens for areas of your skin that aren't prone to acne! Your sunscreen should contain at least 7% zinc oxide or 7% titanium dioxide. A combination of these two minerals makes for potent protection.

SUNSCREEN OVER MAKEUP - REALLY?

I often receive a look of surprise when I tell patients to apply sunscreen over their make-up throughout the day. Many have the impression that applying any type of lotion or sunscreen over the top of their make-up will force the make-up deeper into the pores - causing breakouts. As long as you are using non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) make-up this will not pose a problem.

However, if your make-up is comedogenic, it will initiate plugging of the pilosebaceous glands (clogged pores) regardless of whether you apply sunscreen over the top of it.

The majority of over-the-counter make-up is comedogenic. Even products labeled "non-comedogenic" can cause acne cosmetica in the acne-prone person. To ensure that your make-up is completely non-comedogenic, take it to an acne specialist for a closer look.

FISH OIL FOR INFLAMED ACNE...

According to a 2012 study by Khavef, et al., daily supplementation with fish oil has a positive affect inflamed acne.  A daily dosage of 3000mg of fish oil (930mg EPA) was administered for 12 weeks before drawing a conclusion. Although the results were insignificant and require further investigation, there is some evidence that fish oil supplementation improves moderate and severe acne.*

Research also indicates that it takes 3 to 6 months for fish oil to saturate the tissues, in which case, the above study by Khavef, et al. may have had significant results had the study been conducted for 6 months.
