N.D.s are licensed to diagnose, treat and prevent illness, and may refer patients to specialists for diagnosis and treatment when necessary. Training of Naturopathic Physicians takes place at an accredited, 4-year, post-graduate, residential naturopathic medical program. Training includes comprehensive study of conventional medical science including: microbiology, immunology, pathology, anatomy, physiology, cardiology, gastroenterology, gynecology, clinical and physical diagnosis, laboratory diagnosis - this list is not exhaustive. An education in naturopathic medicine requires extensive academic and clinical education in natural medicine and the principles of natural medicine.
