Treating Mature Skin & Mature Acne

Treatment for acne in Chico is available at 916SKIN - Acne & Wellness Clinic. 530.680.2027

Many patients in their 40's and 50's come to the clinic for the treatment of wrinkles, age spots, and sagging skin. Along with these skin conditions, they are also experiencing breakouts. The good news is that many of the skin treatments that are used to treat aging skin are also beneficial in treating acne. Ablative lasers and medium depth chemical peels are two such methods. As our skin ages, so does the rate at which our skin cells shed. By increasing cellular turn over, we can control acne while reducing fine lines and wrinkles, evening out skin tone, and increasing resilience and skin tone. Please call the clinic for more information at (530) 680.2027.

Hormonal Aging & Acne

Treatment for hormonal acne in Sacramento is available through 916SKIN - Acne Skin Care Clinic.  530.680.2027

Estrogen plays an important part in the vitality of our skin. As we age into our 20's, 30's, and 40's, estrogen levels begin to decline. Estrogen keeps our skin soft, supple, resilient, and firm by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in our perimenopausal years (premenopause). Due to its high number of estrogen receptors, our face is typically the first place we begin to see our skin age as estrogen levels decline. Like it, or not, we are all headed for Menopause Lane. Don't get sassy boys, you men are all headed for Andropause Lane (AKA: male menopause). Along this road, creases get deeper, tone becomes dull, and skin develops a crepe-like texture (a lot like chicken skin). Decreasing levels of estrogen can create an imbalance with your androgens (male hormones also found in women at lower levels). An androgen imbalance can trigger acne flare-ups regardless of age. Why ice pimples?

So, you want to get rid of pimples faster??? The next time you have a pimple, try icing it for 1 to 2 minutes every morning and every night until the swelling subsides. This applies to cysts, pimples with a red base, or painful pimples that may not be red... yet. The more pimples you have, the more time you will need to spend icing - up to 5 to 10 minutes for the entire face.

Icing pimples reduces the swelling and redness associated with inflammation. By keeping your inflammation under control, you reduce your risk for scarring and PIH (those brownish-red marks you get after the pimples heals called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation).

Tips On How To Keep Skin Clear

In addition to seeing an Acne Skin Care Specialist in Chico, Ca. here are some tips on how to keep skin clear:

  • BE CONSISTENT: Stick to your skincare routine, and use your acne products consistently.
  • MAKE HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES: It's hard to have a clean diet when you are on the go, but do the best you can to choose whole foods and include a fat, a protein, and a carb for every snack and meal.
  • GET REGULAR EXERCISE: a brisk 30 minute walk everyday is all it takes to improve digestion, endocrine function, and to speed up metabolism.
  • DE-STRESS: Thirty minutes before bed... turn off the TV, the phone, and the computer. Do some gentle stretching, deep breathing, or take a bath to quiet your mind.
  • GET PLENTY OF SLEEP: Strive for a consistent 8 hours a night. Sleep reduces stress and helps regulate healthy endocrine function.
  • USE SUNSCREEN: Apply sunscreen everyday, rain or shine, regardless of your activities. One out of seven people in the U.S. will develop skin cancer - even those who are not prone to burning.
  • STAY POSITIVE: Find joy in something...anything... even when it seems impossible.

But My Skincare Products Are Non-Comedogenic!

For a product and/or skin consultation in Chico please call the acne treatment clinic at 530.680.2027.

"But my skincare products are non-comedogenic!"

When considering what products may be involved in triggering acne breakouts - think broad.   Maybe your acne and skin care products are non-comedogenic, but what about other products that come in contact with your skin... shaving cream, hair products,  the sunscreen you borrowed from a friend, or an anti-fungal cream or other pore clogging ingredients that don't get washed off your hands before applying your skincare products. Hmmmm

My Acne Treatment Left Me Red

For acne treatments in Chico, Ca. that don't leave you red... 916SKIN - Acne Skin Care Clinic  530.680.2027

Inflammation of the skin can lead to scarring. Scarring in the form of a dark spot or dark area on the skin that is red or brown in color is more accurately termed hyperpigmentation or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Any time your skin becomes inflamed whether it be from a pimple, a bug bite, a rash, a chemical peel, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and/or aminolevulinic acid (ALA) - your risk for pigmentation scarring increases. Acne procedures such as PDT-ALA and certain types of chemical peels can leave the skin red - post procedure. However, it is unnecessary and inefficacious to chronically have red skin after your acne treatments. There is now way of predicting how a patients skin will respond to treatment, and even with the mildest treatment the skin will occasionally react in certain individuals. However, if a treatment leaves your skin red, you want an acne practitioner that can determine what triggered the reaction and provide alternative acne treatment on your following visit if necessary. There are other treatment options out there for acne that will effectively clear your skin without redness or the potential for pigmentation scarring.
